27.12.20 Home Pretest and Merry Christmas!

Updated: Jan 13, 2021

A third lockdown came to London just before Christmas, but I had a pre-test of my project at home with a friend's help. The test also revealed several issues that I could modify in the little time I had left.

1. During the test, Lidar needed the Lidar plug-in to calibrate the projection area and the touch area to recognise hand movements accurately. This process required a lot of patience and exploration to get it right. The plug-in screen shows four points (below) corresponding to the four corners of the mapping area. I have to find the extent of the projection by constantly touching on the wall and aligning the four points on the wall one by one. As can be seen in the picture the purple area is the touch area, while the dense blue dots are items, or obstacles, scanned by the Lidar.

2. During the test, there was a problem with the demo's sound, and it did not trigger the flashing effect by touching the heavily light-polluted area. There was no sound and no visual impact when interacting throughout the test, and I will fix these two bugs after the test.

3. The projector's location, due to the limited testing location at home, the projector could only be placed on the table. So when interacting with the project, a large part of the display area is blocked when a person is standing in front of the projector. Hence, the projector's placement is also crucial in the final installation.

4. The response area for touch should also be adjusted, as sometimes I found that I did not touch the area that should trigger the text display but did so.

These are the problems I found during the pre-testing of the project, which shows the importance of pre-testing. It helps me find a lot of bugs before the final placement of the piece and gives me time to fix it, and the pre-test also helps me better fix some bugs that I may not be aware of. However, due to the embargo, I couldn't invite as many people as I wanted to experience the installation to get different feedbacks, so I had to find as many problems as I could and correct them. However, pre-testing plays a vital role in the completion of a project.
