I had a tutorial with Caitlin this week. Caitlin asked me a few questions based on my tutorial form to get me thinking about: How to make the installation? What techniques and materials to use? What would the audience experience be like? Why can the idea of being able to touch the sky would be useful in combating light pollution?
I researched the questions posed by Caitlin, and my final idea was still to make an installation that would provide audience interaction, its an interactive 'night sky' similar to fluid particles. Include a projector mapping a wall or a curtain that the audience could interact with the projection. I wanted to make a hypothesis to provoke the viewer's curiosity: what would happen if it were possible to touch our unreachable night sky? However, if the audience interacts with the sky I have created, they will see a visual change. My tentative scenario is that if the viewer touches the night sky, the sky will disappear and the animation will show a city polluted by light at night. Through the hypothetical title, the audience is guided to have a 'Close encounter' with the sky, and through the visual changes, the audience is made to reflect on the impact of humans on the natural environment and the consequences of human actions. Thus, the audience is left with a sense of reverence for nature, which is not to be touched or destroyed at will. In my representation, light is constructed as a visual language, creating an abstract form that combines the changes brought about by the animation with the interactive actions of the viewer, thus increasing the participant's sense of self-reflection and impact on the changes they see. This work is an interactive installation in which the viewer interacts with the mapping on the wall, inspiring the viewer to think about the changes that human activity has made to people's environment from the perspective of the impact of technology on nature.
For the viewer, the most intuitive feeling is the possible fear of nature and the inability to access it. Indirectly, through this interactive installation, we hope to make the audience feel the impact of urban development on the night sky. This natural heritage is easily overlooked under our own influence and reflects on the effects of human activities on the environment.
But this week I seem to be a bit unsure of where to go with my project. I also talked to Maria a bit in the offline class. I don't think my project goes far enough, it's just a simple interaction. But I don't know which part of the project is missing. This week, I read some more articles about light pollution and better understand the effects of light pollution. I think it would be a good idea to add some dimensions to my project to show the impact of light pollution to make the whole piece more complete, and I will refine this idea further next week.
