What I learned this week
The course I'm most interested in this week is Tobias Speculative Rendering lecture. About Speculative Design, I've read Speculative Everything before. In my opinion, Tobias's lecture is mainly about the methodology of critical design or model aesthetics. As Dunne & Raby says, "Physical props are definitely the most important element of speculative design." With this lecture, I may have found a new design method - building models. The modelling world is full of imagination, or it is also a virtual world. I can use 3D modelling to complete some artworks that I find difficult to achieve in the real world. For me, I used to learn Maya and use Maya to make animated movies. The advantage of animated films over films is that the use of shots is not restricted. In animated films, the movement of the camera can be completely at the willing of the author, while in real film shooting, the use of some shots often needs the help of much photographic equipment. To put it simply, I think the work in 3D Modeling is to some extent freer than other design methods, and it is easier to achieve the final effect. Especially for the completion of works in the current environment, we have to stay at home due to the influence of COVID-19, 3D modelling, a practical design method, maybe a better choice. Tobias's lecture showcases the work of many artists, as well as his own work with Blender. These seemingly simple 3D models contain many deep social and political meanings, and these critical design works are exactly what I should study.
Creative writing
In the World Building session this week, Lydia asked us to choose three words, some of which were topical. And as far as possible divergent thinking to find the impact of these phenomena or patterns, in the way of group work in class. The topics chosen by our group were vertical farms and the dark Web (see Image). Due to the limited time, there is still one word to finish, and the rest will be done next week. For me, such a method is very useful. The advantage of this method is that it can help me determine the theme in creative writing, expand my thinking as far as possible, and find the factors related to this theme. In my opinion, this method can help me to build a very complete writing outline. In the process of creative writing, I only need to connect these elements that I have thought of, and maybe I can finish a nice creative writing work.
However, Natalie provided me with another way of writing - to create around an object, and I think it is also a good way to write through an object. Through Lydia and Natalie's course, I think the most important thing in creative writing is to have a theme. It can be several topical words or an object to create around these. That's what I got out of this week's writing class.
About unit 2.2
This week I refined my idea about life after a human crisis. I think maybe this is an era without social media, without digital technology. I was inspired by Lucy McRae's Future Survival Kit(see image), which is a response to the digital era. McRae said, "AI, the environment, automation - these themes are destabilising our cosy lives. I'm not suggesting we exit and permanent retreat, I'm just trying to question how we Navigate our future." Through this idea, Maybe I could make a mini world or Mobile escape hatch. It's all about survival design, or what the post-crisis world looks like. After working with Caitlin and Filipe tutorial, I also got some inspiration, and I will further promote the project in the following week.
